Frequently Asked Questions
Is pasture raised beef the same as grass fed and finished beef?
No. Pasture raised beef and 100% grass fed and finished beef are not necessarily the same thing.
Pasture raised describes where cattle live. Grass fed and finished describes what they eat.
Cattle can be raised on pasture for much of their lives and still receive supplemental grain or be moved to a feedlot and grain finished before harvest. So seeing “pasture raised beef” doesn't necessarily mean the cattle ate grass their entire lives.
At Nourish Food Club, we require both. Our cattle are pasture raised AND 100% grass fed and grass finished, grazing grasses and other pasture plants from beginning to end.
And we take it one step further. Our cattle are rotationally grazed using regenerative farming practices, so we're intentionally managing how they move across the pasture, too.
Where they live matters. What they eat matters. And how they're managed on the land matters.
What is pasture raised turkey?
Pasture raised turkey comes from turkeys raised outdoors on pasture, where they have access to fresh air, sunshine, grasses, insects, and space to move and forage.
But just like with pasture raised chicken and eggs, “pasture raised” tells you where the turkeys live. It doesn't necessarily tell you what they eat.
Turkeys are omnivores and pasture can provide grasses, seeds, insects, and other foods, but they still require supplemental feed to meet their nutritional needs. That means the ingredients in their feed matter tremendously.
At Nourish Food Club, our turkeys are raised on pasture AND fed a custom corn- and soy-free feed designed to be low in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).
We believe both pieces matter.
How the turkey lives and what the turkey eats.
What does mobile pasture raised turkey mean?
Our turkeys aren't simply given access to a permanent outdoor lot. They're raised in a mobile pasture-based system that allows our farmers to regularly move them onto fresh ground.
Moving the turkeys gives them access to fresh grasses, plants, insects, and other things to forage, while preventing them from continually living and eating on the same worn-down patch of ground.
Their housing, feeders, water systems, fencing, and other infrastructure are designed around a farming system that moves with the birds rather than keeping thousands of turkeys in one stationary barn.
Moving animals across pasture also distributes manure and nutrients across the land instead of concentrating them in one location.
It's certainly more work for the farmer. But that's kind of the point.
We don't want to make the animal fit the infrastructure. We want to build infrastructure that allows the animal to live the way it was designed to live.
That's what we mean by mobile pasture raised turkey.
Is Nourish Food Club turkey corn and soy free?
Yes! Our pasture raised turkeys are fed a custom corn- and soy-free feed.
And this distinction matters.
“Pasture raised” does not mean corn free or soy free. Even turkeys raised outdoors on pasture receive supplemental feed, and most poultry feeds are commonly formulated with ingredients such as corn and soy.
At Nourish Food Club, we make our own corn- and soy-free feed.
But our goal isn't simply to remove corn and soy. We formulate our poultry feeds to be lower in polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs), particularly linoleic acid, because poultry are monogastric animals and the fats they eat can directly influence the fatty-acid composition of their meat.
You are what your food eats.
That's why we care just as much about what's in the feeder as what's growing in the pasture.
Why does turkey feed matter?
Because turkeys are monogastric animals, meaning they have a single-chambered stomach rather than the multi-compartment digestive system found in ruminants like cattle and sheep.
That difference matters when it comes to fat.
In ruminants, microbes in the rumen substantially transform many of the fats the animal eats before those fats are absorbed. Poultry don't have that same rumen biohydrogenation process, so the fatty-acid composition of their feed can have a much more direct influence on the fatty-acid composition of their body fat and meat.
Which you then consume!
Ingredients commonly used in poultry feed, including corn and soy products, can contribute significant amounts of the omega-6 polyunsaturated fat linoleic acid.
That's why we developed a custom corn- and soy-free, low-PUFA feed for our poultry.
Pasture matters. But when you're talking about poultry nutrition, what's in the feeder matters too. Because even pasture-raised chickens are typically fed a feed that is high in Omega 6 PUFAs.
You aren't just eating the turkey. In a very real sense, you're eating what the turkey ate.
What is low PUFA turkey?
Low PUFA turkey comes from turkeys fed a diet intentionally formulated to reduce polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly the omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid.
The types of fat in turkey can vary depending on what the turkeys eat.
That's why simply putting turkeys on pasture doesn't automatically make their meat low in PUFA. A pasture raised turkey can still eat a supplemental feed based heavily on corn and soy.
At Nourish Food Club, our turkeys receive a custom corn- and soy-free feed formulated specifically to be lower in PUFA while also having access to pasture for natural foraging.
Is Nourish Food Club turkey raised without antibiotics or other drugs?
Yes. Our pasture raised turkeys are raised according to our Needle-Free farming standards.
That means we raise them without vaccines, antibiotics, dewormers, or other pharmaceutical interventions used in many livestock production systems.
Federal law already prohibits the use of added hormones in poultry, so a “no added hormones” claim on a label doesn't really mean much.
Our focus is on creating a farming system that supports the birds' health from the beginning: fresh pasture, regular movement, appropriate stocking densities, clean water, high-quality nutrition, and thoughtful animal husbandry.
Rather than building routine pharmaceutical interventions into the production system, we want to create conditions where the birds can thrive without them.
Farm-ing, not Pharm-ing.
How is pasture raised turkey different from conventional turkey?
The difference goes far beyond whether the turkey technically had access to the outdoors.
Conventional commercial turkeys are generally raised in large stationary poultry houses, often with thousands of birds living together indoors. Feed is brought to the birds, manure accumulates in the same housing environment between clean-outs, and the production system is designed around efficiency and scale. There are also real animal-welfare differences between these farming systems.
Pasture raised turkeys have more space and opportunities to express their natural behaviors. They can forage, scratch, explore, move around, breathe fresh air, get sunshine, eat grasses and bugs, and, quite simply, be turkeys.
Our small regenerative farm partners take this even further by using mobile pasture raised practices. The turkeys are regularly moved across pasture, giving them access to fresh ground, grasses, insects, sunshine, and new areas to forage and explore.
But pasture is only one piece of the equation.
Our turkeys also receive a custom corn- and soy-free, low-PUFA feed and are raised according to our Needle-Free farming standards.
Because when we evaluate how poultry is raised, we look at the entire system:
Where did it live? What did it eat? How was it managed? What interventions were used? And how did that farming system interact with the land?
That's what makes Nourish turkey different.
What turkey cuts and products can I order?
Turkey doesn't have to be something you eat once a year at Thanksgiving!
Nourish Food Club offers whole pasture raised turkeys seasonally, but we're also turning some of our turkeys into products that make it easier to enjoy high-quality turkey throughout the year.
Depending on availability, our turkey collection includes whole turkeys, ground turkey, and sliced deli turkey. We also have nose-to-tail cuts like turkey heart, liver, and gizzards.
When making the drumsticks and ground chicken, we use the bones to make collagen-rich bone broth that is canned in glass.
We don’t source random turkey for all these products. They all come from the same mobile pasture raised turkeys fed our custom corn- and soy-free, low-PUFA feed and raised according to our Needle-Free farming standards.
Because we work with small farms and whole animals rather than an industrial supply chain, availability can change throughout the year. We are working on adding more small regenerative turkey farmers into our network to hopefully be able to offer more pasture-raised turkey throughout the year.
