Frequently Asked Questions
What does 100% grass fed and finished beef mean?
100% grass fed and finished beef comes from cattle that eat grass and other pasture plants for their entire lives, including the important finishing stage before harvest. They are never fed grain.
Most cattle begin their lives eating grass. In the conventional beef system, however, many are eventually moved to feedlots, large confined areas where cattle are grouped together and fed energy-dense rations, often built around grains and grain byproducts, to rapidly increase weight gain before harvest.
Cattle are also very different from single-stomach animals like chickens and pigs. They are ruminants, with a complex four-compartment digestive system uniquely adapted to ferment grasses and other fibrous plants. When grazing healthy, diverse pasture, cattle can obtain the energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals they need from forage.
Cattle can digest grain, but high-grain diets change how fermentation occurs in the rumen and can lower rumen pH. Grain finishing also provides a much more energy-dense diet, which can accelerate weight gain and increase fat deposition and marbling.
Nourish Food Club's 100% grass fed beef comes from cattle that remain on diverse pasture from beginning to end, grazing the grasses and other plants their digestive systems are naturally adapted to utilize. They are never sent to feedlots and never grain finished.
That's why the word “finished” matters. When we say 100% grass fed and grass finished beef, we mean pasture and forage from beginning to end, with no grain finish hidden at the end.
Is grass fed beef the same as grass finished beef?
No. Grass fed and grass finished don't necessarily mean the same thing.
Most beef cattle spend at least part of their lives eating grass. But in the conventional beef system, cattle are commonly moved from pasture to feedlots for the final months of their lives, where they're transitioned to energy-dense, grain-based diets to increase weight gain before harvest.
So simply knowing that a cow was “grass fed” at some point doesn't tell you what it ate during the finishing stage.
Truly, “grass fed” by itself is kind of meaningless to us. Most cattle eat grass. What matters is whether they were grass finished.
Grass finished beef comes from cattle that continue eating grass and other pasture plants through the finishing stage rather than being switched to a grain-based diet before harvest.
At Nourish Food Club, our beef is 100% grass fed AND grass finished. Our cattle remain on diverse pasture from beginning to end.
No feedlot. No grain finishing. Grass from beginning to end.
What is regenerative beef?
Not all 100% grass fed and finished beef is created equal, both in its potential impact on the land and in the nutritional composition of the finished beef.
That's because how we raise and manage livestock has a tremendous impact on the land.
Regenerative beef comes from cattle raised using farming practices designed to improve the health of the land while producing food.
For example, cattle can spend their entire lives eating grass while remaining on the same pasture and repeatedly grazing the same plants. This is known as continuous grazing, and when poorly managed, it can contribute to overgrazing, reduced plant diversity, and soil degradation.
That's very different from regenerative, rotationally grazed beef.
At Nourish Food Club, our regenerative farm partners strategically move cattle between pasture areas 1–4 times per day, then give grazed areas time to rest and regrow. This helps plants rebuild above and below ground, while cattle naturally return nutrients to the soil through manure and their grazing stimulates new plant growth.
And this isn't just a feel-good farming philosophy. There's actual science behind it!
Research on Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) grazing has found improvements in measures such as soil carbon, soil nitrogen, water infiltration, and pasture productivity compared with conventional continuous grazing.
And here's where it gets really cool: what's better for the land can also change the food it produces.
Healthier soils can support healthier, more diverse pastures, and what cattle graze ultimately influences the nutritional composition of their meat.
Research from Dr. Stephan van Vliet and colleagues has shown that cattle grazing diverse pastures can accumulate beneficial plant compounds called phytonutrients in their meat. These include naturally occurring antioxidants and other bioactive compounds that we typically associate with fruits and vegetables!
Research comparing pasture-finished and grain-finished beef has also found differences in several nutrients and bioactive compounds, including higher concentrations of certain phytochemicals, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidant vitamins in pasture-finished beef.
So regenerative farming isn't just about producing beef. It's about improving the land that produces the food.
Our goal is to build a food system where healthier soil → healthier, more diverse pasture → healthier animals → more nutrient-rich food for you.
Because we believe farming should leave the land better than we found it.
Is pasture raised beef the same as grass fed and finished beef?
No. Pasture raised beef and 100% grass fed and finished beef are not necessarily the same thing.
Pasture raised describes where cattle live. Grass fed and finished describes what they eat.
Cattle can be raised on pasture for much of their lives and still receive supplemental grain or be moved to a feedlot and grain finished before harvest. So seeing “pasture raised beef” doesn't necessarily mean the cattle ate grass their entire lives.
At Nourish Food Club, we require both. Our cattle are pasture raised AND 100% grass fed and grass finished, grazing grasses and other pasture plants from beginning to end.
And we take it one step further. Our cattle are rotationally grazed using regenerative farming practices, so we're intentionally managing how they move across the pasture, too.
Where they live matters. What they eat matters. And how they're managed on the land matters.
How does rotational grazing work?
With rotational grazing, cattle are strategically moved between smaller sections of pasture rather than remaining on the same ground continuously. The cattle graze an area intensely for a short period, eating grasses and other plants while naturally fertilizing the soil with manure. Then they're moved onto fresh pasture, and the grazed area is given time to rest and regrow before cattle return.
Think about it like building muscle at the gym.
You challenge a muscle during a workout, but the muscle doesn't actually grow while you're lifting. The adaptation happens during recovery. Stress it, give it adequate time to recover, fuel your body with healthy food and nutrients, and it can come back stronger.
Pasture works in a surprisingly similar way.Grazing provides the temporary stress. Their manure, urine and saliva provides beneficial soil nutrients. Then the plants need adequate recovery time to regrow their leaves, rebuild their root systems, and replenish energy reserves before they're grazed again.
Without that recovery period, repeatedly grazing the same plants can weaken them over time. But when grazing and recovery are managed intentionally, the pasture can become more productive, resilient, and biologically diverse.
That's why our regenerative farmers may move cattle onto fresh pasture 1–4 times per day.
Graze. Move. Rest. Regrow. Repeat.
That recovery period is where so much of the magic happens.
Is Nourish Food Club beef grain free?
Yes. Nourish Food Club beef is 100% grass fed, grass finished, and grain free.
Our cattle spend their lives grazing diverse grasses and other pasture plants and are never switched to grain or sent to a feedlot for grain finishing.
And just as importantly, our cattle aren't simply left on pasture. They're rotationally grazed using regenerative farming practices, giving previously grazed areas time to rest and regrow while helping build healthier, more diverse pastures.
We aren't one giant beef farm. Our beef comes from a network of small regenerative farmers right here in the United States (not imported from another country like many other brands). We grow by partnering with more small farmers who share our farming standards.
The result is beef that we believe is some of the most nutritious and delicious meat you can find, raised in a way that's better for the cattle and the land.
100% grass fed. 100% grass finished.
No grain. Regeneratively raised on small American farms.
Is Nourish Food Club beef raised without antibiotics or hormones?
Yes! But our farming standards go much further than simply avoiding antibiotics and added hormones.
In conventional beef production, cattle may receive antibiotics, vaccines, dewormers, growth-promoting hormone implants, and other veterinary medications.
In fact, the FDA permits the use of certain steroid hormone implants in beef cattle, including compounds such as estradiol and trenbolone acetate, to accelerate weight gain and improve feed efficiency.
And those are only some of the pharmaceutical interventions available in conventional livestock production.
That's why we developed our Needle-Free farming standard.
Our 100% grass fed and finished beef comes from cattle raised without vaccines, antibiotics, added growth hormones, dewormers, or other pharmaceutical interventions.
But here's what we believe is even more important: rather than relying on routine pharmaceutical interventions, we want to create farming systems that support animal health from the beginning.
Our cattle live outdoors on diverse pasture, where they're rotationally grazed onto fresh ground throughout the day. They have space to move, graze naturally, and eat the grasses and other plants their digestive systems are adapted to utilize.
Our regenerative farmers focus on proper nutrition, healthy soil, diverse pastures, lower-stress environments, and thoughtful livestock management to support the animals' natural health and immune function.
We believe that when you change how an animal lives, what it eats, and the environment it's raised in, you can reduce the need for pharmaceutical interventions in the first place.
Farm-ing, not Pharm-ing.
How is grass fed and finished beef different from conventional beef?
The differences go far beyond what the cattle eat. They extend to how the animals live, the nutritional composition of the beef, and the impact farming has on the environment.
In the conventional beef system, all cattle typically begin their lives on pasture before being moved to feedlots, where they're finished on energy-dense, grain-based diets (often GMO corn and soy based) designed to accelerate weight gain.
But there's another side to this system that doesn't get talked about enough: its environmental impact.
When large numbers of cattle are concentrated in feedlots, enormous amounts of manure accumulate in relatively small areas. Without effective management, runoff can carry excess nutrients, pathogens, and other contaminants into surrounding soils and waterways.
And it's not just manure.
Conventional beef production may involve antibiotics, growth-promoting hormones, dewormers, and other veterinary pharmaceuticals. Research has shown that veterinary drug residues and antibiotic-resistant bacteria can enter the environment through livestock manure and agricultural runoff, contributing to concerns about water pollution and the spread of antibiotic resistance.
Further, there are degenerative, conventional farming practices that are used to grow the grain that cattle eat in feedlots. These crops are often GMO and sprayed with pesticides during the growing season.
Instead of regenerative agriculture, poorly managed intensive livestock systems can have a degenerative impact on the environment.
But the differences don't stop at the farm.
What cattle eat also influences the nutritional composition of the beef.
Research comparing grass-finished and grain-finished beef has found significant differences:
- More omega-3 fatty acids and a lower omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio in grass-finished beef.
- Higher concentrations of certain antioxidant vitamins, including vitamin E.
- More beneficial plant compounds (phytonutrients), including phytochemical antioxidants that we typically associate with fruits and vegetables.
- Differences in fat composition, with grass-finished beef often being leaner and having a different fatty-acid profile. Some grain-fed, feedlot meat can be much fattier than more 'ancestral' ruminant meat. So eating 100% grass-fed beef is more aligned with what our ancestors ate historically.
There's also what's NOT in 100% grass-fed beef that can show up in conventional beef: pesticides and drug residues.
Nourish Food Club beef comes from cattle that are 100% grass fed and finished, raised without routine pharmaceutical interventions under our Needle-Free farming standards, and rotationally grazed on diverse pastures by small regenerative farmers.
Rather than concentrating animals in feedlots, our farmers strategically move cattle across the landscape, allowing pastures time to recover while naturally returning nutrients to the soil.
Our goal isn't simply to produce more nutritious beef. It's to produce food in a way that also improves the health of the land.
Because we believe the food system should be nourishing people, animals, AND the environment.
Where does Nourish Food Club beef come from?
A significant amount of the 100% grass fed beef sold in the United States is actually imported from other countries.
Nourish Food Club's beef is different. Our 100% grass fed and finished beef comes from small regenerative farms right here in the United States that we know and work with directly.
We aren't one giant beef operation. Instead, we're building a network of small American farmers who share our commitment to raising healthy animals, regenerating the land, and producing incredibly nutritious food.
Our farmers raise cattle on diverse pastures using regenerative rotational grazing, moving them onto fresh grass while allowing previously grazed areas time to rest and recover.
All of our cattle are 100% grass fed and grass finished, never grain fed, and raised according to our Needle-Free farming standards.
And we're intentionally scaling differently. Instead of continually adding more cattle to one massive operation, we grow by partnering with more small regenerative farmers.
More small farms. More farmers. Healthier soil. Better food.
Why is 100% grass fed beef more expensive?
Producing 100% grass fed and finished beef simply takes more time, land, and hands-on management.
Grain is extremely energy-dense, which is one reason conventional cattle are moved to feedlots and fed grain-based rations during the finishing stage. It allows cattle to gain weight (and fat) and finish much faster than they typically would on pasture alone.
Finishing cattle entirely on grass is different. Farmers have to maintain high-quality, nutrient-dense pasture capable of supporting cattle all the way through finishing, which can take longer than grain finishing.
And regenerative grazing requires work. Our farmers may move cattle 1–4 times per day, while also moving or managing fencing, water, minerals, and shade. Compare that with concentrating cattle in a stationary feedlot where the feeders, living quarters and water set ups do not move.
Maintaining productive, diverse pasture also requires land and careful management. Commodity grains can provide relatively inexpensive, concentrated calories, while producing high-quality grass-finished beef means managing a living ecosystem year after year.
So when you pay more for regenerative, 100% grass fed and finished beef, you're paying for a fundamentally different farming system: more time, more land, more management, and more farmer involvement to raise cattle entirely on pasture.
What grass fed and finished beef cuts can I order?
Nourish Food Club offers a wide variety of 100% grass fed and finished beef, including everything from premium steaks to everyday staples and traditional nose-to-tail cuts.
Our collection includes ribeye steaks, New York strip steaks, tenderloin (filet mignon), sirloin, roasts, brisket, short ribs, shanks, beef bacon, ground beef, and our nutrient-dense Primal Ground Beef.
We also believe in using as much of each animal as possible! That's why we offer nose-to-tail cuts like beef heart, liver, kidney, oxtail, and other traditional cuts.
