Homemade Eggshell Toothpaste: A Simple Way to Reuse Your Eggshells
If you read last week’s post about ways to reuse eggshells instead of throwing them away, you probably noticed something…
once you start saving eggshells, you begin realizing there are actually quite a few practical things you can do with them!
One use that has been around for a long time is homemade toothpaste.
It might sound a little unusual at first, but eggshell powder has traditionally been used because it’s naturally rich in calcium and trace minerals. Many people enjoy using it as a simple alternative to more conventional toothpaste formulas.
And surprisingly, it only takes a few ingredients to make.
How to Make Homemade Eggshell Toothpaste
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup eggshell powder
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 10–20 drops peppermint extract or peppermint essential oil (optional)
Step 1: Prepare Your Eggshell Powder
Before making toothpaste, you’ll want to properly prepare the eggshells.
How to make eggshell powder:
- Rinse shells after use (tip: start collecting these daily to prep)
- Boil for ~10 minutes to sanitize
- Let dry completely
- Bake at ~200°F for 15-20 minutes
- Blend or grind into a very fine powder
The finer the powder, the smoother the toothpaste texture will be.
A coffee grinder tends to work best for this.
Step 2: Mix Everything Together
Add:
- eggshell powder
- coconut oil
- peppermint (optional)
to a small glass jar and stir until smooth.
If needed, add a little extra coconut oil until it reaches a paste-like consistency.
Some people also choose to add a small amount of baking soda for extra whitening and stain removal, though it can feel mildly abrasive for some individuals.
How to Store It
Store your toothpaste in a small glass container with a lid and use as needed.
Many people prefer scooping a small amount onto their toothbrush with a clean spoon or popsicle stick rather than dipping directly into the jar.
Why People Use Eggshell Toothpaste
Eggshells are primarily made of calcium carbonate, which is one reason many people are interested in using them in homemade toothpaste formulas.
A lot of people appreciate that it’s:
- simple
- low waste
- inexpensive
- made with just a few recognizable ingredients
And honestly, it’s also just satisfying finding another practical use for something that would normally end up in the trash!
Once you start setting eggshells aside instead of immediately tossing them, you begin noticing how often small reusable things show up throughout everyday life.
Nothing complicated. Just another old-fashioned habit slowly making its way back again.
